First Skoolie Thoughts: He Said, She Said Edition
The reality that we bought a school bus to convert into a skoolie, or tiny house on wheels, is finally sinking in. I mean, every morning I walk out the front door on my way to work and am greeted by this 26′ beauty sitting in my driveway. But, since buying her, we’ve definitely had some skoolie first impressions.
But, I can still remember my thoughts and feelings that first week or so that we had her (I call the bus a ‘her’, although she isn’t named yet). I figured it would be funny to compare what I was thinking with what was going through Richard’s mind.
Me: Excitement first! OH.MY.GOD. We really bought a freakin’ school bus! Followed pretty quickly by a slight touch of buyer’s remorse..OH.MY.GOD. we bought a freakin’ school bus! Once we peeled back her layers (i.e. subfloor), I was a little anxious that we might have made a mistake. As time passes, I am more relaxed about her and as long as we take the conversion in bite-size pieces, I am good.
Him: -she looked so short-dusty and dirty-loud and smelly.
Me: That’s it? That’s all you thought when you first saw her?
Him:
Yikes.
He wasn’t wrong, though. She isn’t the easiest on the eyes. But when I look at her, I think that all she needs is a little TLC. She’s been forlorn and forgotten and we are the lucky ones who get to bring her back to her glory days!
First Skoolie Impressions Inspire Hope
So, we are still hanging in with her and she is growing on us. We are working diligently to get her insured and retitled. It shouldn’t take us much longer, but she isn’t a full-time build. We can only work on her in the evenings and on the weekends. I still have some anxiety (always will), and she is still short (and dusty and loud), but she’s ours. I know now, those skoolie first impressions were just that, our first thoughts about a game-changing adventure!
